Discover Dogs 2012 Pictures

November 13, 2012 Leave a comment

Here’s some of the dogs I photographed at Discover Dogs at Earls Court last Saturday. It was good to be back there again and I managed to meet up with some of the lovely people I’d been corresponding with over the year. This is a great event to go to if you’re already a dog owner or are thinking of getting a dog as 200 or so breeds are there on show. Enthusiastic and knowledgable breed owners are there to fill you in on everything you need to know about their particular breeds. I’m always intrigued to see so many different dogs all together; tall ones, short ones, fat ones, thin ones, lively ones, docile ones. They’re all there. I even managed to see a few that I recognised (and photographed) from last year like Vinnie the Dogue de Bordeaux and Bobby the Schnauzer. One dog I didn’t get to see however (although I know he was there because he was tweeting) was Lucky the Chihuahua. I did a dog photo session with Lucky a month or so back and some of the pics can be found after this post and on my Facebook page.

I’m also going to give a mention to the person with the best hair of the day, namely Bridget Orlando. She was photographing the poodles at the same time as me so I just had to get a shot of her with her closely-cropped, pink spotty hair. Bridget is an artist who paints people and animals – her dog portrait gallery has some lovely images – check it out.

This will be the last post from Discover Dogs 2011 but hopefully I’ll be back next year to do it all again (and Crufts in the meantime).

Thanks to all you new visitors, those of you that have left comments and all my new ‘likes’ on the Facebook page. I have added all the pictures from the two days on to the photo section of the Facebook page and all the pictures have been added to the online shop in case you are interested in buying prints etc.

As well as the quick dog snaps I do on my dog walks, I do offer dog photo sessions which last for approximately an hour and cost £45 – you’ll receive a slideshow to view the pictures and the session also includes one print of your choice up to the size of 10×8″.

Contact me directly for further details – this could make a great Christmas present!

Even More Dog Photography from Discover Dogs

Dogs….what fantastic creatures to photograph. It’s the sheer variety of shapes, sizes and features that keeps it interesting. Obviously each breed has it’s own unique features and doing justice to a dog portrait in a matter of minute or two is quite challenging. The individual breed owners are so used how their dogs look and must have loads of pictures of them taken in more favourable circumstances. They will all know what it takes to get the best from their dogs and what they need to do to get a good reaction from the dog to help the photo.

Picking out the individual breed features is fascinating, whether it be capturing the alertness in the eyes of a Border Collie, the angular features of a Greyhound or the folds in the face of a Dogue de Bordeaux.

Once again, thanks for your comments and if you’ve liked what you’ve seen and want to get regular updates (I blog most days), either subscribe to the blog, like my Facebook page or follow me on Twitter.

Dog Photography from Discover Dogs

November 15, 2011 4 comments

Met lots of lovely owners (and of course their dogs) over the weekend at Discover Dogs at Earls Court.

It was the first time I had attended a show like this, but I wanted to get more of an insight into the dog world other than just photographing the dogs that I see on my dog walks. I knew by coming up here I would be able to see many breeds altogether in one place and several breeds that I just don’t come across on a daily basis.

I’m going to put some of these dogs up here this week, in no particular order or preference. I don’t have individual stories to tell about each dog as it was a case of photograph the dog very quickly, chat to the owner, ask the name and breed of the dog and then move on.

Also, this is quite different to the normal way I work, which is mostly outside. I photographed all of the dogs here in the available light, without any flash, with fast lenses. That’s the way I work most of the time. I’m not a great lover of on-camera flash and there’s something about shooting available light to keep the ambiance of the situation. Also shooting wide open with fast lenses does throw the background out of focus which is favourable in these conditions, when you have chair legs, cages and lots of people in the background.

Do feel free to comment on any of the pictures if you spot your dog and please pass this website address on to anyone else who would be interested.

I’ll put a few from Saturday and a few from Sunday on each day. There are more from Saturday as I had more time and Sunday was just heaving and much harder to get clear shots in between all the dog-patters!

Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year

November 14, 2011 3 comments

Just thought I’d get a couple of shots out on the blog from Discover Dogs which took place at Earls Court over the weekend.

What a great event. With over 200 breed stands there, this was a perfect place to come and meet the dogs and talk to the experienced owners. But it’s the best of the crossbreeds featured here from the Scruffts finals.

The winner of the Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog was Milo who eventually went on to win the Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year title. Owner, Sarah Singleton collected the award, from BBC Radio London’s ‘Barking At The Moon’ duo, Anna Webb and Jo Good and star of TVs ‘Merlin’, Anthony Head.

The winner of the Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch was Daisy, a Jack Russell/German Shepherd cross, seen here with owner Emma.
