Tilly with the fancy coat

January 31, 2013 1 comment

This is Tilly, a greyhound/lurcher that I photographed just before the snow came. Love her stripey, coloured coat.

Hopefully, my new website should be up and running soon. The blog will still feature, so the dogs that I photograph out and about will be posted regularly. The idea is to upload all the pics I’ve shot so far in the past 18 months or so since the blog began and you’ll be able to view these by date and they’ll be tagged with the dog’s name. You’ll also be able to order prints and other framed products a lot more easily, straight from the new website without being transferred to another site.

So, bear with me. The site is nearly ready to go and I’m working my way through boring stuff like domain names and ‘pointing nameservers’. You have to be such a geek to get anywhere these days.

Sunday afternoon snow dogs

January 21, 2013 Leave a comment

About this time last year, we had snow and I managed to photograph a few dogs on the Common and over at the bomb crater where loads of people were sledging.

One of the dogs I photographed last year was Nelson the Pointer and he was the first dog I came across again yesterday. He’s such a handsome chap and I love his black coat with grey flecks down the front.

I met a couple who had four rescue dogs from GRWE Greyhound Rescue (here’s the link to their Facebook Page Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue in the South East). From left to right they are Poppy and Tully (Whippet Xs), Lenny and Stanley (Lurchers). This charity does great work in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abused and abandoned greyhounds and lurchers. These four were such lovely dogs and were being very good considering all the fun that was going on around them. I love the way these jacketed dogs on different coloured leads are all looking out the picture the same way.

Leya is a Spanish Water Dog and I always like seeing breeds that don’t crop up that often. This is a breed of dog developed by shepherds in Spain as a multi-purpose herder. They’re sometimes used as a gundog, as well as an assistant to fishermen.

Others photographed were Hattie, the Border Collie, an unknown Weimeraner and of course a few shots of my Barney who raced around on the slopes dodging the sledgers.

Diva Dogs Day Photos 4

October 3, 2012 Leave a comment

Well it seems as though the backlash has started about various things that did or did not happen at Diva Dogs Day.

At least two Facebook pages have been set up, Leave Your Diva Dogs Day Complaints Here and Diva Dogs Day Opinions That Can’t Be Deleted. Gripes are coming thick and fast from stallholders and disgruntled attendees. Whether the outside bit was an indoor shopping village is a matter of opinion. It had a roof of some sorts, but no walls, so was open to the elements. It’s a good job it remained dry on the day as I feel a lot of the expensive stock could have got wet if it had rained. A lot of complaints seem to be from those who had bought the £50 VIP tickets. I don’t know if this was worth it or not; I’ve seen the response from the organisers on how the VIP area worked and what was on offer. Reading posts from people on the FB pages would tell you that all was not well with this. If you’re going to charge £50 for a VIP ticket, you need to make sure they have a good experience. I’m sure some people did have a good time but they won’t be the ones coming on to these FB pages. On the other hand, complaints of broken glass being left on the floor and no water bowls left out for the dogs is just unacceptable.

Whether you consider TOWIE/Gladiator type celebrities as something to get excited about is a personal taste. I wouldn’t know them from Adam – not my thing. However, I did recognise David Van Day and I did have a brief chat with actress Rebecca Ferdinando (who was lovely); I didn’t know who she was but got chatting after I had photographed her with her dog Jackson (the pic is below).

On the plus side, there were experts to offer advice on dog training, dog welfare, puppy farms, dog fashion shows and the agility stuff going on outside, but all of this is standard stuff at a dog show or country fair. The Guiness World Record couldn’t be verified officially which was a bit of an anti-climax.

The way I see it, the whole event was a big promotional oppotunity for Louise Harris and her business. With TV cameras there to film the proceedings, even a purple Lhasa Apso was not going to be upstaged by a grown woman in a pink tutu with a book to sell.

It’s seems as though the organisers have over promised and under delivered, leaving the paying public feeling short-changed. So, the fight goes on and reading some of the posts, there’s a lot of unhappy people out there. Demands for refunds and threats to get Trading Standards involved, will carry on. I do believe that Louise Harris has offered some recompense to disgruntled punters – a 40% discount on any purchase from her store. Oh dear.

On a lighter note, I hope you like the pics. Comments always welcome.

Honnington Country Fair Dogs

September 4, 2012 Leave a comment

Made the long trip over to the other side of Southborough last weekend to visit the Honnington Country Fair. There was lots to do and see and of course, being a country fair, lots of people brought their dogs along. I had my camera so the dog photography oppotunity couldn’t be missed. Lots of different breeds and shapes and sizes, so this was all good.

I’ll put a few more on my Facebook page so if you like what you see, please ‘like’ my page and share.

Tree-Climbing Lurcher

December 14, 2011 Leave a comment

Today’s dog is owned by ‘A modern Renaissance Man’ or so it says on Dave Arthur’s blog page.

Dave has lead a rich and varied life through music, storytelling and writing. I first met Dave years back as I went to school with one of his sons and he’s always been a fascinating bloke to talk to. I’ll leave you to click through to his website as Dave tells it much better than I ever could.

So, back to the dog – this time it’s Dusty, Dave’s Lurcher. Obviously, lurchers are quick and ideally suited for racing and hunting. Dusty is also a great jumper and will clear fences and stiles so you’ve got to be careful.

She’s also a tree climber. Since taking these pics, I’ve talked to another lurcher-owner to see if this is a common trait but no, not wth this other one.

The pics at the end have got to be a couple of my favourites since I started this blog. Maybe it’s the setting with the trees in the background but for me, there’s just an air of mystery about them.
